چکیده

In living organisms, the oxidative stress is associated with several physiopathological affections (e.g. atherosclerosis, cancer, aging, neurodegenerative diseases). The oxidative stress is generally initiated by generation of reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen species (RNS) (Halliwell & Gutteridge, 1990). ROS are continuously formed during cellular metabolism and are removed by antioxidants defences. ROS from endogenous and exogenous sources results in continuous and accumulative oxidative damage to cellular components and alters many cellular functions. The most vulnerable molecules to oxidative damage are proteins, lipids and DNA (Kohen & Nyska, 2002; Catalá, 2009, 2011a, 2011b).

Effect of lipid peroxidation on molecular arrangement of phospholipids in liposomes prepared from egg yolk phosphatidylcholine or total rat brain lipids. A 31P NMR study.

Changes in molecular arrangement of membrane phospholipids in the course of lipid autoxidation were studied by means of broad-band 31-P NMR spectroscopy. Multilamellar liposomes prepared from egg yolk phosphatidylcholine (PC) or total lipid extracts from rat brains (TL) were used as models. The initial lamellar arrangement of phospholipids of both types changed as lipid peroxidation proceeded a...

The mechanism of Fe(2+)-initiated lipid peroxidation in liposomes: the dual function of ferrous ions, the roles of the pre-existing lipid peroxides and the lipid peroxyl radical.

The mechanism of Fe(2+)-initiated lipid peroxidation in a liposomal system was studied. It was found that a second addition of ferrous ions within the latent period lengthened the time lag before lipid peroxidation started. The apparent time lag depended on the total dose of Fe(2+) whenever the second dose of Fe(2+) was added, which indicates that Fe(2+) has a dual function: to initiate lipid p...

Triacontanol inhibits both enzymatic and nonenzymatic lipid peroxidation.

The effect of the plant growth regulator, triacontanol (TRIA) on lipid peroxidation was studied in three different systems: (i) isolated chloroplasts of spinach (Spinacea oleracea L.) leaves; (ii) egg lecithin liposomes; and (iii) soybean lipoxygenase (LOX) system. The nonenzymatic lipid peroxidation in isolated chloroplasts and egg lecithin liposomes was measured as the amount of thiobarbituri...

The Influence of Lipid Composition and Β-carotene on Lipid Peroxidation in Liposomes

Oxidative damage to membrane lipid is one of the prime events occurring in aging and other undesirable physiological processes. In this study experiments were performed on liposomes (prepared either from crude erythrocyte phospholipids or purified egg yolk phosphatidylcholine) as models of lipid bilayer portion of biomembranes. The effects of β-carotene, and phospholipid composition on peroxida...
